A Brand Synopsis

I probably should have read a few brand promises from other companies before resolving that ours is “done” or “right,” but we believe that we?re somewhat unique as a company, in many respects. So we?re going with this one. Therefore, this is something of a blind study. I hope it might spark some thought on the subject and hope that it might even help others working on similar efforts.

People, Work With Me Here

This is a cry for help. No, really. Our groovy little unit, Unit Interactive, is awash in cool projects and we need a world-class designer/developer to join our team. If this describes you and you're in the Dallas area Metroplex, please keep reading and heed the clarion call!

Falling Down

I?ve been a martial arts student for a couple of decades and in that time I?ve known quite a few others who were brilliant technicians and were otherwise formidable individuals, but lacked a fundamental skill set: the ability to fall safely and gracefully. This is a grave omission, because training with the belief that things will always go well and as-planned is delusional. Delusion is not a sound context for any serious endeavor; like design, for instance.

Tough Client: My Son

My 10-year old son walked up to me last month while I was watching the news and said, “Dad, I want a website.” I turned down the TV and asked why on earth he wanted a website. “To talk about the books I read,” he answered. I said I wasn?t sure that his friends would be all that interested in what he had to say about books. “Well, there might be lots of kids out there who are wondering what are some good books to read. I can help with that.” Wow.

Design View Show #8

This episode examines the gulf between Web standards and the idea of Web craft quality, and how some of design's cultural and information leaders perpetuate a misunderstanding of the medium.

Killing Some Bad Layout Conventions

As good design further penetrates the Web, once highly-regarded conventions fall into disfavor and are replaced by more effective ones. Yet some flawed conventions persist. In fact, they persist on some pretty high-profile websites; to their detriment.
