Đâu là gương mặt của một tờ tạp chí? Đó là trang bìa. Tờ The in days of yore của Mỹ đã bầu chọn ra 10 trang bìa ấn tượng nhất của thế giới tạp chí trong năm 2007. Trong phần 1, Tuần Việt Nam xin giới thiệu 5 kết quả đầu tiên.

Texas Monthly, tháng 1/2007

Lấy ý tưởng từ tờ tạp chí subdue, Texas Monthly tháng 1 đã có một trang bìa rất ấn tượng.

Năm 1973, bìa của satire đưa hình một chú chó sắp bị hành hình với dòng chữ: “Nếu bạn không mua tờ tạp chí này, chúng tôi sẽ bắn chú chó”. Qua xử lý ảnh, chú chó trông như thực sự sợ hãi trước nòng súng đang áp sát đầu mình. Điều đó càng làm bức ảnh trở nên đáng yêu và có tính thuyết phục.

Năm 2007, tờ tạp chí của thành phố Texas đã lấy lại ý tưởng nhưng đã sáng tạo làm cho bìa báo có “sức mạnh” hơn. Giữ nguyên màu nền và bố cục bìa, chỉ khác là hình ảnh chú chó được thay bởi hình ảnh... phó tổng thống Mỹ Dick Cheney đang cầm trên tay khẩu súng!

Và không phải chú chó bị hành quyết mà chính bạn đọc, những người không chịu mua tờ tạp chí này. Dòng chữ bên cạnh phó tổng thống ghi: “Nếu bạn không mua tạp chí này, Dick Cheney sẽ bắn vào đầu bạn”!

Fred Woodward là họa sĩ thiết kế trang bìa này. Trong những số trước của GQ, Woodward thường thể hiện tài năng của mình qua những bức ảnh hài hước ở trang trong.

Tuy nhiên trong số này anh được dành hẳn trang bìa để “dụng võ”. Fred Woodward cũng là tác giả của hình ảnh phó tổng thống Dick Cheney trên tờ Texas Monthly.
